Selecting Your Perfect Mascara

Selecting the perfect mascara can seem like a daunting task. Mainly because there is a plethora of options on the market right now, and new ones coming out all the time. So how do you select the mascara that’s right for you? Well, my friends, I am here to help, and hopefully make your selection process a bit simpler.

Lets begin with the basics, what color mascara should you select? I often get asked, “Should I wear brown or black?” The answer is much simpler than consumers make it out to be. If you are fair, blonde, or a red head, get brown for an every-day look, and get black for a night-time smoky or more dramatic eye look. If you are a brunette or have a darker skin tone variation, just get black, because you can pull it off all the time!

I will share my secret with you, and tell you that I have made matters much simpler for myself. I have tried a multitude of mascaras throughout my makeup wearing years, and none have beat my all-time go-to, Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real Mascara. The volume and length this $24 mascara gives me is un-matched. If you are not into a little clump, this mascara may not be for you. But if you don’t mind it, look no further! More recently, Benefit launched their Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real Tinted Lash Primer, which comes in only one color, which is “mink brown”. So not only does this $24 primer do an awesome job of separating and lengthening the lashes, but it also has vitamins which help with lash growth, it hydrates your mascara, and it can be worn on its own as a “brown” mascara alternative. This is simply a-maz-ing. I cannot recommend these two any more. They are perfect together and on their own!

Other mascaras which I have tried and enjoyed immensely have been the Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes $23, which is actually quite similar to my fav Benefit. The only problem I found with this is that taking it off at night before bed can be quite tedious. Similar to the benefit mascara, it is tubular, but it’s on a different level. It’s definitely one I would not rule out, but I prefer the before mentioned. Another great mascara is the Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill. I found this mascara to be wonderful, offering length, volume, and all that jazz. However, at $32, I will stick to my preferred. I felt that it did nothing more than my Benefit mascara and honestly the natural bristles tend to stick together after a few weeks which can lead to clumping if not properly applied.

In my "not so great" mascara category I will mention the Chanel Le Volume mascara $32. I am normally such a Chanel Cosmetics fan that I really wanted this mascara to work out for me. Unfortunately the clumping was ridiculous, even for me. In addition, I swear this was making my lashes brittle. Not OK!!! Finally, working in cosmetic sales, I have noticed that the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara $23 is extremely popular, and I swear I gave it a good shot, but no thank you. It gave length and volume, but it clumped wayyyyyy too much, and by the end of the day I was wearing more of it under my eyes, in a raccoon-like manner, than I was wearing on my lashes.

The last tidbit of advice I will give is regarding the actual purchase of mascaras. Now, I will say this, coming from someone who works in cosmetics retail, if you are planning on "trying out the mascara" and plan on returning it if it's not everything you hoped for and more, then ask for a sample. If no sample is available purchase a travel size instead. There is no point in you purchasing a full size mascara if you are not sure the product will work for you.
