When Doug (my husband) and I found out we were expecting, we were over-joyed with the idea of having an extension of ourselves running around in the world. Immediately questions arose. What will the sex be, who will they look like, what will we name them... the list was endless. Then when we found out we were having a baby girl, reality started to set in and the pregnancy immediately seemed more real. We honestly really had no preference as to what we were having. Both my husband and I had the same mind set when we found out we were pregnant, that all we could ask for was a healthy and happy baby. But once we found out the baby was a girl, and she was healthy as far as they could tell, it was "game on". My husband, not wanting to jinx anything, was very non-shalaunt about the whole thing. He didn't want to get overly excited, since less than a year before we had lost our first pregnancy. I on the other hand was the complete opposite. I could not contain nor restrain myself. Immediately all I could think about was baby "girl". To me that meant pink, dolls, flowers, hearts, disney, and princess. All the things I absolutely love, being a girly-girl myself. I was on typical "girly" overload. So I immediately began to plan the nursery.

Now, although my little nugget would not be sleeping in her nursery until farther along after her birth, I simply did't care. This was an opportunity for me to give my baby an expression of my love for her, reflected by my love and passion for creativity and design. I designed the entire nursery on a VERY tight budget. I had to make due with things I had and what we could afford, which turned out to be more personal and perfect than I could have ever asked for. I ended up "DIY-ing" the majority of the room, and honestly, had I not been pregnant, I would have done more, but there are limitations on what a pregnant lady can do... So here goes.

Below are the before pictures of the bedroom. Let me briefly explain... So our home has two bedrooms we were deliberating between for the nursery. The room we selected (pictured below) is the largest, and has an on-suite bathroom and the larger closets. We figured that this room would be best, but soooo... much had to be done. Starting with the carpeting and walls (cringe worthy- I know). Essentially the only thing that stayed (based on the pictures below), that we would have changed if we could have, was the pop-corn ceilings. Everything else was ripped out, painted over, or replaced. The dark color on the walls was my attempt, when we had originally moved in, at painting the room. However, I ran out of paint and then never got more because there was no reason to finish the room, since no one ever went in it.

So, I'll explain what we did. We replaced the pink discolored carpeting with a new dark wood look laminate and a thicker/bigger white base board. The dated vertical blinds we replaced with white lace balloon draperies that are then anchored by white lace panels and then layered with a solid white panel that is tied back with a pink tassel on both sides. All the window treatments are hanging by a silver rod with glass finials. We also added a black out shade under all the soft window treatments to allow for daytime naps. (There are literally 4 layers of draperies on this window- excessive?? I think NOT) The walls we painted with one of my favorite beiges of all time, called "Sandstone" from Behr. Finally for the "basics" of the room, we replaced the hideous fan with a beautiful antique silver cherub chandelier we found on ebay.

After the bare bones of the room were completed, I moved onto the furniture. For anyone that has ever purchased nursery furniture, things can get pricey very quickly. I needed some nursery basics: A crib, a rocker, and a changing table.

I had seen, and fallen in love with, a crib from Bratt Decor. However, that particular design was discontinued and unavailable for purchase. I even searched for it second hand, but unfortunately could not come by it. So I had to come up with a "plan B". I still went with a Bratt Decor crib, just a different style. This is the "Paris" crib. Then, I knew I wanted a neutral colored rocker with nail heads. We bought this one online from Home Decorators. Its not huge, but not too small, and offers support in all the right places. The ottoman we have for it was from Homegoods. We've actually had it for years, and it tied in nicely and offered a place to raise your feet while feeding and rocking the baby to sleep. The changing table was a DIY project. It was actually my mothers dresser when she was a teenager. My grandmother kept it in her house, and it, along with the other pieces from the bedroom set, was used in her guest bedroom. We almost got rid of the bedroom set at one point, but thankfully did not. My husband sanded down the furniture and for the changing table we just bought a changing pad, and screwed it in on the right side.We kept the original handles on the drawers, but I did purchase new knobs for the top drawers at Hobby Lobby.

Once my main pieces were in place I had to pick the accessories and other decor pieces. I wanted to keep it all feminine and classic. So I went with a pink, beige, gold, and silver color palette. All-in-all I could not be happier with the end result. It's become my favorite room in the house, and I cannot wait for my little nugget to get to use it. For now she is sleeping in her cradle in our master bedroom with us, so we still have some time.
